This is a very good website and I find it enlightening as long as it is kept in perspective. It is often more publicized that women as the “weaker sex” are beaten upon or are at greater risk of danger from men. However, I think people should keep in mind that this is not always the case. As a divorce lawyer for more than a decade I have seen a substantial number of women come before the Rhode Island Family Courts to obtain Protection from Abuse Orders. The ramifications of those orders are somewhat severe and are based purely on the word of a person (usually a female) who claims to be in fear of her spouse. If granted, a husband and father may be thrown out of his own house with only 15 minutes to grab necessary things, the inability to see his children and perhaps the loss of custodial rights if only for a short period of time. Sadly, a good many of these women lie or are using the Protection from Abuse laws as a way of leveraging things against their husband in a divorce proceeding. I have seen all too many women come before the court and tell the judge that they lied under oath to “keep their man under control”. In other cases, I know of women who have scratched their own faces and cut their own bodies, threw themselves to the ground and screamed for someone to call for the police because their husband was abusing them. In truth, women do have reason to be fearful of men that they know are capable of physical violence against them. However, men are also victims of the abuse laws which many women now abuse in order to get what they want from their husband or boyfriend and they use these laws as a control mechanism for their supposed “loved one” or partner so they can get their way. It is sad that when men are victims in this way, they do a disservice to women who truly need these laws to protect them.
